Wide open race to become Santos’s successor

After serving the maximum constitutionally allowed two terms as president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos is now getting ready to hand over power to a successor. But it is far from clear who that may be. With a full list of presidential runners yet to be confirmed, the early pre-electoral polls point to a wide-open race between those that want to secure and perfect what is considered to be Santos’s main political legacy – the signing of a peace deal with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) insurgent guerrillas – and those that want to wreck it. Against this backdrop the direction that Colombia will take in the next four years represents an unknown.
