There is little doubt that Guatemala's First Lady Sandra Torres de Colom is
serious about running for the presidency in September 2011. In the latest twist
to the ongoing saga surrounding her bid for the top job, Torres and her husband,
President Alvaro Colom (himself barred from re-election), this week revealed
they were filing for divorce in order to sidestep the apparent constitutional
ban on her candidacy. The divorce papers, which indicate a “mutual desire for
separation" can, according to local legislation, be processed within a month.
