Mexico: A Mexican air force helicopter carrying the interior minister, Alfonso Navarrete, and the governor of the south-eastern state of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, as well as other officials, crashed on 16 February, claiming 14 lives on the ground. Those aboard the helicopter were unhurt. The helicopter came down in Santiago Jamiltepec, a town in Oaxaca. Navarrete and Murat were surveying the damage caused by an earthquake in the area. As he was bringing the helicopter down to land in a field, the pilot lost control and it skidded and flipped over on top of two cars. There were no reports of fatalities from the earthquake itself.
