Colombia: President Juan Manuel Santos has announced Col$1.5tr (US$520m) of resources for conservation and environmental recovery in Colombia. Speaking from the Serranía de Chiribiquete, the country’s largest national park, Santos said that his government would shortly issue an environmental decree outlining details of a national conservation plan, which would help the country comply with the Paris climate agreement. Santos announced the widening of the Serranía de Chiribiquete by a further 1.5m hectares (ha), bringing its total size to 4.3m ha, in the process converting “ethnic communities into the park’s protectors”. Santos said he was hopeful the park would be declared a Unesco World Heritage Site this year.
