Paraguay kicked off 2011 by overtaking, for the first time ever, Argentina's total volume of beef exports for the month of January. Exports of beef in Paraguay amounted to nearly 8.2 tonnes in January compared with 7.9 tonnes in Argentina. The total value of beef exports in 2010 climbed by nearly 70% on the previous year to US$970m in Paraguay. Argentina made US$1.35bn from beef exports in 2010, down from US$1.8bn a year earlier, and this is expected to fall to US$1.2bn in 2011. Uruguay's livestock minister, Tabaré Aguerre, announced last week that exports of beef would hit US$1.4bn in 2011.
