Uruguay: Uruguay’s national meat institute (Inac) has reported that Uruguay’s meat exports have increased by 17% in the first 45 days of 2018 compared with the same period in 2017. According to an Inac report, meat exports reached US$265m in the period between 1 January and 17 February. Beef accounted for 82% of the total exports, at an average of US$3,425 per tonne, and was up 17% in value terms and 16% in volume terms compared to the same period in 2017. Sheep meat accounted for 4% of the total, at an average of US$4,624 per tonne, and fell 2% in revenue and 12% in volume terms. China was Uruguay’s largest market for meat exports, importing 43% of the total for a value of US$113m. The next largest importer was the European Union (15%), followed by the North America Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) countries- Canada, Mexico, and the US- at 14%.
