TRINIDAD & TOBAGO | Crime and terrorism. Two episodes this month have ensured that crime and terrorism remain at the top of the political agenda in Trinidad & Tobago. The first was the thwarting of an alleged terrorist plot to disrupt Carnival; the second was a day of near anarchy in East Port of Spain on 19 February. On 12 February it was announced that a ninth man had been detained by the security forces in connection with a feared terrorist plot to attack revellers during Trinidad’s famed Carnival. The man, detained on 12 February, was said to have been in possession of books on Islamist terrorism, including one titled Justification for Jihad. On 19 February, residents in East Port of Spain blocked streets and torched property in protest at the police killing of a local man. The government responded by calling on the opposition to support the proposed new anti-gang legislation, but the opposition is insisting on the inclusion of a 24-month ‘sunset clause’ in the legislation to ensure draconian new measures do not become permanent. The political wrangling continues.
