Mercosur: Paraguay’s foreign minister, Eladio Loizaga, has announced that delegations from the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and Canada will begin negotiating a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) on 9 February. Loizaga said that as Paraguay currently holds the Mercosur pro-tempore presidency, the meeting is scheduled to be held in Paraguay’s capital, Asunción. Loizaga added that the start of the formal negotiation process comes after the two sides successfully concluded preliminary conversations on the possibility of reaching an agreement. The minister noted that the negotiations are expected to include not only the free trade of goods but also services and the liberalisation of government procurement between the two parties.
