*Brazilian authorities have arrested one man for his role in a series of armed attacks which caused the death of seven people in Fortaleza, the capital of the north-eastern state of Ceará. The gun battles broke out in three different areas of the Benefica de Fortaleza neighbourhood on the night of 9 March, including the so-called ‘Gentilandia’ square, named after the university students who flock to the bars and restaurants there. According to a 2017 study from the Brazilian forum for public security, Ceará is Brazil’s ninth-most violent state, behind Sergipe and Rio Grande do Norte in first and second respectively, but above Rio de Janeiro in tenth.
