* Brazil’s leading tile and water-container maker, Eternit, has filed for bankruptcy in São Paulo state. This comes after the supreme court (STF) made it illegal for companies to make products containing any forms of asbestos in September 2017 following recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO). Last year, Eternit was forced to pay R$500m (US$150,000) in damages from a court in the north-eastern state of Bahia and R$150,000 (US$45,000) in compensation to residents who became ill from asbestos poisoning.
