Venezuela: Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri announced during a meeting with Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that he will not recognise the results of Venezuela’s 20 May presidential election. According to Macri, the election will be neither transparent nor fair and therefore will not be recognised as a valid democratic election by his government, a view that is backed by Prime Minister Rajoy, who also said that Spain will not recognise the result of the election. The violation of human rights and repression of the political opposition in Venezuela under the government led by President Nicolás Maduro has affected the entire region, and Macri has decided to speak against the upcoming election and Maduro during the Summit of the Americas heads of state meeting due to be held in Peru on 13-14 April. Macri has also called on Venezuela to establish a serious democratic election for citizens to choose their next leader fairly.
