Peru: Freight transport sector unions have called for a 24-hour general strike in Peru’s northern macro-region area (comprising the regions of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, Cajamarca, La Libertad, Áncash, Amazonas, San Martín, and Chimbote) for 24 April. The strike has been called in rejection of the recent increase in road toll charges applied in the area. The unions consider these to be excessive and want the central government to intervene and convince the private firms in charge of administering roads in the area to reach a deal over new toll charges. According to the strike organisers, it is expected that some 300 local freight transport firms will adhere to the strike.
