PERU: The complex struggle against illegal logging

Peruvian forestry authorities have engaged in a series of high-profile seizures of illegally sourced timber, as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal logging. On 20 March, 150 kilos of the protected species known as ‘holy stick’ (Bursera graveolens) and 175 kilos of charcoal produced from carob wood were captured at the Sullana bus terminal in the northern region of Piura. The following week some 117 illegally-sourced logs were intercepted on the Piura-Chiclayo highway. Yet the international campaign organisation Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) warns that efforts to address illegal logging in Peru are being hampered by a major backlash from the timber industry and its high-level political allies within government.
