COLOMBIA | Coffee exports down. On 4 April Colombia’s national federation of coffee producers (FNC) reported that national coffee production fell by 6% year-on-year to 3.4m 60kg sacks in Q1 2018. According to the FNC, the drop comes on the back of the decline in international coffee prices, which producers say have fallen below their production costs. The low levels of production have also had an impact on exports which, according to the FNC, fell by 14% to 1.2m sacks year-on-year in March. This situation has led the FNC to ask the Colombian government to provide emergency economic assistance to the sector. However, the government, which offered US$358m in subsidies for coffee producers in 2013-2014, has said that it currently lacks the means to provide any assistance.
