Peru: President Martín Vizcarra has signed an executive decree that releases PEN1.5bn (US$454m) in central government funds to the regional and local governments in the north of the country to finance reconstruction efforts in areas affected by heavy flooding during last year’s ‘El Niño’ climatic phenomenon. Northern Peru was one of the areas worst affected by the flooding and the Vizcarra administration has pledged to accelerate the reconstruction efforts to help to fully restore road links and the provision of public services in the north, as part of its bid to economically revive affected communities. The previous government led by Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-March 2018) was heavily criticised for the slow process of the reconstruction efforts in northern Peru. The Vizcarra government has said that it hopes to conclude the reconstruction works in the next 13 months.
