Colombia: Colombia’s state-owned oil firm Ecopetrol has activated a contingency plan in Cantagallo municipality, Bolívar department, to contain an oil spill in the Magdalena river. In a statement it said that the origin of the spill was possibly a fracture in the pipeline that runs between Cantagallo and the nearby town of Puerto Wilches (Santander department) and that the causes are being investigated. The contingency plan calls for three control points to be constructed in order to contain the flow of oil through the river with barriers. Ecopetrol has also advised the affected municipalities of Cantagallo and Puerto Wilches to close their aqueducts as a preventive measure.
