*General Walter Braga Netto, the military commander in charge of the federal seucrity intervention that has been taking place in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state since February 2018, announced that the withdrawal of the military from these duties would begin in October, with the whole process to be finished by June 2019. A transition plan will be presented to President Michel Temer on 14 June in Brasília. Speaking at an event held by the Rio de Janeiro trade association Associação Comercial do Rio de Janeiro (ACRJ), Braga Netto said he was sure the intervention would leave a positive legacy and would be considered a “case of success”. However, figures from Observatório da Intervenção, a grouping of civil-society organisations which has been monitoring the intervention, show that in April, after two months of the intervention, the number of violent crimes such as shootings had increased.
