Argentina: Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest economic figures, which show that the unemployment rate in the country’s 31 main urban areas stood at 9.1% in the first quarter of the year. The unemployment rate is virtually unchanged from the 9.2% recorded in the first quarter of 2017. However, it represents a significant increase compared to the 7.2% rate recorded in the final quarter of 2017, suggesting that the labour market is starting to slow down. The Indec attributed this quarterly increase in unemployment to a fall in labour demand during the first quarter. However, the Indec noted that the rise in unemployment could be explained by seasonal factors.
