Honduras: Honduras’s 128-member unicameral national legislature has re-elected Oscar Chinchilla as the country’s attorney general for another five-year term. Chinchilla was elected on 29 June, in line with a proposal by deputy Felícito Ávila of the small opposition Democracia Cristiana (DC) party, after the legislature failed to agree on any of the five candidates on the shortlist - Abraham Alvarenga, Hermes Omar Moncada, Lidia Estela Cardona, Carlos Roberto Cálix, Daniel Arturo Sibrián (who has been elected as deputy attorney general). The re-election of Chinchilla – whose new term begins on 1 September - has been well received by the Organization of American States (OAS)-sponsored Support Mission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (Maccih), by President Juan Orlando Hernández, and by the association of Honduran prosecutors. However, the main opposition left-wing Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) led by former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009) has complained that the process was a “pantomime” while the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Honduras also released a statement following Chinchilla’s election warning that the failure to observe constitutional norms and the principle of legality during the election could weaken the attorney general's office (AG).
