* A total of 15 people were killed and seven injured in various armed attacks in bars in Mexico’s north-eastern city of Monterrey, the capital of the state of Nuevo León, on 8 July. The six bars subjected to the attacks were linked to the Cartel del Noreste, a faction of the Los Zetas drug trafficking organisation (DTO), according to the state attorney general’s office. The perpetrators of the armed attacks, the worst in the city since 2011, are believed to have been hitmen from the rival DTO Cartel del Golfo. In further violence, Humberto Vega Ávalos, a prison director in the north-western state of Tamaulipas, was gunned down in the border city Nuevo Laredo.
