Honduras: Roberto Zacapa, the head of the Honduran institute of terrestrial transport (IHTT), a government agency, has announced a deal with the transport sector ending protests which began on 18 July over demands by transport unions such as the Consejo Nacional del Transporte (CNT) for a rise in tariffs (initially) and then lower petrol prices. Under the deal, the government led by President Juan Orlando Hernández has agreed to increase public transport tariffs. According to Zacapa, transport unions had been calling for 'executive' (more comfortable) buses to increase tariffs from HL11.00 (US$0.45) to HL26.64; for traditional buses, from HL4.00 to HL16.83; and for collective taxis, from HL13.00 to HL40.58. Under the deal the government has agreed to increase tariffs by HL1 for executive buses and collective taxis and by HL2 for traditional buses.
