Last year saw various mining and oil projects cancelled in Colombia following popular consultation processes, known as consultores populares. The consulta popular consists of a referendum organised by a municipality where an extractive activity takes place – mining or oil and gas exploration or extraction. The processes, often championed by local environmental and community NGOs as a way to protect the environment and local communities, have recently suffered setbacks as the Colombian government has refused to further finance them.
