* Brazil’s health ministry announced that the country has 1,579 confirmed cases of measles this year, the majority of which are in the northern states of Amazonas (1,232 cases) and Roraima (301 cases). In a statement, the health ministry said that the outbreaks are related to the same strain of the virus that has been circulating in Venezuela since 2017. A government vaccination campaign against polio and measles, due to end on 31 August, has been extended until 14 September. The government says that 91.3% of the target population (10.2m children under five) received the vaccine during the campaign, and it hopes that by extending it, a further 976,000 children will be vaccinated.
