* Blockades are ongoing in Peru’s Cusco region staged by coca producers (cocaleros) led by organisations such as the Federación Provincial de Campesinos de La Convención, Yanatile y Lares (Fepcacyl). Cocaleros are calling for the central government to increase the price of legal coca and in defence of a law creating the Universidad Nacional Intercultural de Quillabamba, a non-profit public higher education institution located in the town of Quillabamba whose status is currently at risk. They are also calling for better education, security, potable water. According to the latest press reports, the Cusco-Quillabamba highway is closed at various points, classes in the region have been suspended, and more than 100 police officers have been sent to the area.
