* Norwegian metal company Norsk Hydro has announced that it will resume operations at half capacity in its Alunorte alumina refinery, located in Brazil’s northern state of Pará. Days after Alunorte announced that it would halt all operations, Brazil’s federal environmental agency (Ibama) granted the refinery exceptional authorisation to use its press filter technology to process bauxite residue. Norsk Hydro says activity will resume under the supervision of Pará’s environmental agency, Semas. Alunorte, which is the biggest alumina refinery in the world, had been operating at 50% capacity since March due to an environmental dispute, and the suspension of its operations last week threatened thousands of jobs in the state of Pará, as well as the company’s supply to global markets.
