* An official at China’s foreign ministry, Wang Xiaoyuan, has said that Chinese firms would be interested in helping develop the 1,500km ‘Tren Maya’ railway project proposed by Mexico’s President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The Tren Maya is a new high-speed passenger and freight railway line project that will link various touristic attractions and ports in Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. López Obrador has said that the project would help to promote the economic development of the area. But the proposal has faced serious questions about the potential costs and environmental damage that it could cause. Nevertheless, during a visit to Mexico, Wang, a former ambassador to Colombia, said that Chinese firms have a lot of experience in building high-speed railways, have access to abundant financial resources, and “would be interested in participating in the project”.
