More than 200,000 people marched in Mexico City on 27 June against public insecurity, and specifically against kidnapping, in the latest manifestation of a wave of frustration with what is perceived as relentlessly rising crime rates. The demonstration was organised by a host of private organisations, supported by the umbrella employers' federation, egged on by media hype and by clear signs that, n an electoral year, all political parties are ready to trip over each other in showing their commitment to law and order.
