* The Comunidad Andina (CAN), a customs union which comprises Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, has selected Héctor Quintero Arredondo as its new secretary general for the period 2018-2023. Quintero, who is a Colombian lawyer, former senator, and former diplomat, was chosen during the 43
rd meeting of the CAN council, at its Lima headquarters. Quintero affirmed his commitment to working for further integration of the Andean countries, not just through trade but also on a cultural and social level. The foreign ministers from all four CAN countries attended the meeting, as did Peru’s trade minister, and the deputy trade ministers from Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador, to discuss the elaboration of a new CAN working plan. The plan reportedly includes the organisation of activities commemorating the CAN’s 50 years of existence next year, a coordinated response to the Venezuelan migration crisis, and work on improving the region’s electricity connection.
