Row with congress over police funding. As government officials and politicians have been playing up, under strong public pressure, their commitment to containing crime, the federal public security minister, Alejandro Gertz, has become embroiled in a bitter dispute with congress over funding for the police. Gertz has stated publicly that the M$800m (US$70m) cut made by congress to his budget will force him to suspend all activities of the federal preventive police for three months. Opposition legislators charge Gertz with twisting the facts to gain political points. They say no such cut took place, because congress approved precisely what the executive had asked for. PRI congressmen have openly accused the minister of trying to blackmail them into giving him more money.
