* Ecuador’s national statistics and census institute (Inec) has revealed that the national unemployment rate was 4% in September, representing no significant change to the rate recorded the same month last year (4.1%). Inec reported that unemployment rates this September were higher in urban areas (5.2%) than in rural ones (1.7%), and for women (4.8%) than for men (3.4%). The report also found that the rate of suitable employment (full-time contracts) reached 39.6% in September, with no significant change compared with September 2017 (40.4%). This figure was higher in urban areas, where suitable employment totalled 48.8% of total employment. Underemployment reached 19.4% nationally in September this year, with no significant shifts from September 2017 (20.5%).
