LatinNews Regional Monitor: Andean Group - 23 October 2018

In brief: Region

* The governments of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, who form the Andean Community (CAN), have agreed to work together to prevent the entrance to the region of the Fusarium oxysporum fungus, the cause of a disease sometimes known as 'Fusarium wilt' or 'Panama disease' (FOC TR4), which attacks the roots of banana plants. FOC TR4 has severely affected Cavendish banana plantations in Africa and Asia and now represents a threat for the industry in Latin America and the Caribbean. The CAN has agreed to a project that will standardise the diagnostic of the pathogen across the region and facilitate the decision-making process for entry or not of vegetal material to be used for planting. The CAN notes that all four countries depend on banana production for employment and food security, and that Colombia and Ecuador are two of the world’s biggest banana exporters.
