* Colombia’s comptroller general (CGR) has reported that mining company Cerro Matoso SA, a subsidiary of multinational mining giant BHP Billiton, owes more than Col$170bn (US$54m) to the Colombian government in unpaid royalties. According to the figures provided to the GCR by Colombia’s national mining agency (ANM), Cerro Matoso failed to pay government royalties over the period 1998-2003, for a total of US$15.4m, and from 2007 to 2012, when it reached a total debt of US$38.7m plus interest. Cerro Matoso operates in the Caribbean department of Córdoba and is one of the largest open-cast ferronickel mines in the world.
