* The international media has cited Marshall Billingslea, the US Treasury’s assistant secretary for terrorist financing, as saying that Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro is “looting” his country’s gold in a new strategy to replace Venezuela’s failing state-run oil company, Pdvsa. Speaking at the Washington-based think-tank Brookings Institution on 24 October, Billingslea said that in recent months the Maduro government had shipped more than 21 metric tonnes (t) of gold mostly to Turkey without approval from the opposition-controlled national legislature. “This gold is being removed from the country without any of the customary safeguards that would ensure the funds are accounted for and properly catalogued as belonging to the Venezuelan people”, Billingslea said.
