* Mexico’s deputy economy minister, Rogelio Garza, has said that the 25% import tariff on steel products recently introduced by Canada is affecting three Mexican steel producers. The Canadian government began levying import tariffs on steel products in a bid to stop its domestic market becoming flooded following the imposition of similar tariffs by the US earlier this year. But the Mexican government has complained that this safeguarding measure by Canada goes counter to the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) and has called for Mexican steel producers to be exempt from Canadian tariffs. Deputy Minister Garza has now identified three Mexican steel producing firms - TenarisTamsa, ArcelorMittal, and DeAcero - that are being affected by the tariffs imposed by Canada and called for these to be compensated should Canada eventually decided to exempt Mexican firms from its tariffs.
