In brief: Honduras

* Honduras’s President Juan Orlando Hernández has described the arrest of his brother Juan Antonio 'Tony' Hernández in the US on drug trafficking charges as a “major blow to his family” adding that “no-one is above the law”.  Hernandez, a 40-year-old lawyer and former legislator for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN - 2013-2017) was arrested on 23 November in Miami, Florida, and has been implicated in testimony provided in March by Honduran drug baron Devis Leonel 'Don Leo' Rivera Maradiaga. Rivera, along with his brother Javier, their parents, and other siblings, headed up the violent ‘Los Cachiros’ drug trafficking gang in Tocoa, on the Honduran Atlantic coast, for a decade (2003- 2013). According to the testimony Tony Hernández had also solicited a bribe in exchange for government contracts. He denies the allegations. Rivera’s revelations have already resulted in the conviction of Fabio Lobo, son of the Honduras's former president Porfirio Lobo (2010-2014), who, in September 2017 received a 24-year prison sentence in the US for drug trafficking.
