* Mexico has requested that the World Trade Organization (WTO) establish a panel to examine its dispute with Costa Rica over the latter’s restrictions to imports of Mexican Hass avocados. Costa Rica decided to ban imports of avocados of the Hass variety from nine countries including Mexico in 2015, citing phytosanitary concerns. In March 2017, Mexico filed a complaint with the WTO, saying that the ban was unjustified. According to Costa Rica’s ministry of foreign trade, Mexico has decided to push forward with the dispute resolution process in the WTO after the two countries failed to reach a solution through bilateral talks. Mexico has asked that the matter be on the agenda at the next meeting of the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body on 4 December.
