In brief: Brazil

* Brazil is to use radars on its borders with Paraguay and Bolivia to combat arms and drugs trafficking. The public security minister, Raul Jungmann, and the commander of the Brazilian air force (FAB) Air Lieutenant Brigadier Nivaldo Luiz Rossato signed an agreement which allows for the transfer of R$140m (US$36m) from the public security ministry to the FAB for the purchase of the radar equipment. The radars will be able to detect aircraft flying at low altitude in areas that are currently hard to monitor and thus prevent drugs, arms, and other illegal merchandise from entering Brazil. Jungmann emphasised the positive impact this will have on public security. Rossato said that the radar equipment should be operational in 2019.
