“A bad month” for press freedom in Nicaragua. This was a warning issued by press watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on 5 December. Two international human rights organisations – the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) – last week sounded the alarm about the increase in attacks against the press in Nicaragua. They argue that the intensification of violence against the media is the latest manifestation of the repression carried out by the government led by President Daniel Ortega against its opponents amid the political crisis which began mid-April.
