Brazil: Roraima state’s prison system under pressure

Penitentiary system services in Brazil’s northern state of Roraima became paralysed in early December, as prison guards demanded to be paid. State employees, who are owed two to three months’ worth of salaries, took to the streets of Roraima’s cities for 72 hours, setting fire to car tyres and blocking the entrance to state government buildings, as well as the Cadeia Pública de Boa Vista, one of the six state-run prisons in Roraima.
