In brief: Brazil

* Environment Minister Ricardo Salles has said that Brazil will remain in the 2016 Paris Agreement on climate change “for now”, despite some opposition to the international agreement in government. President Jair Bolsonaro has frequently criticised the Paris Agreement and indicated that Brazil may withdraw from it, although this had never been confirmed. In declarations to the press, Salles said that the targets for emissions reduction set by Brazil within the agreement’s framework are acceptable, but that the concern is that some aspects of the agreement could undermine Brazil’s national sovereignty and hamper initiatives for economic development.
