On 4 January, the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) reported that it had successfully upheld a 12-day unilateral ceasefire from 23 December to 3 January. As has become common in recent years, the truce spanned the Christmas period and the group explained that the ceasefire was at the behest of “communities that suffer the rigours of war”. However, the Colombian government’s high commissioner for peace, Miguel Ceballos, claimed that the ELN had violated its own temporary truce when Walter Pertuz, a soldier in the Colombian army, was shot dead in the Catatumbo region in the department of Norte de Santander.
