El Salvador: Sánchez Cerén claims security progress; doubts persist

At the start of this month El Salvador’s Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) government led by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén was quick to point to security progress. In a 3 January press conference national police (PNC) chief Howard Cotto said that there were 3,340 homicides in 2018, 16% less than the 3,962 homicides registered in 2017. While this improvement would also seem to have had an impact on public perceptions of delinquency, concerns about the rise in disappearances have cast doubt on the government’s claims.
