* At a recent press conference, Gustavo de Hoyos, the president of Mexican business lobby group Coparmex, said that the first 50 days of the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador had produced negative results. De Hoyos criticised the administration’s decision to cancel the construction of a new airport in the Texcoco area of the Estado de México (Edomex) and what he sees as public-policy decisions adverse to private-sector interests. De Hoyos gave as examples the decision to close Proméxico, a trade promotion agency; Bancomext, an export credit agency; and Inadem, a decentralised public body linked to the economy ministry. De Hoyos was particularly vocal about the senate’s appointment on 18 January of Alejandro Gertz Manero, a lawyer and law professor, as attorney general. Gertz is perceived by some sectors as being too close to López Obrador. In a
tweet, De Hoyos complained that “the main problem in Mexico is the weakness of the rule of law. We suffer impunity because we do not have an autonomous public prosecutor's office, with trained prosecutors who effectively prosecute crimes”.
