In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released the results of its national household survey (PNADC), which show that 13 state capitals recorded the highest levels of unemployment in seven years in 2018. This goes against the national tendency, as the average unemployment rate across Brazil fell from 12.7% in 2017 to 12.3% in 2018. São Paulo (14.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (12.6%) are amongst the 13 cities that registered record levels of unemployment last year. IBGE’s labour and income coordinator, Cimar Azeredo, highlighted the problem of “metropolitan unemployment”, noting that all Brazil’s cities have seen unemployment rise between 2014 and 2018. Azeredo also noted the challenges caused by a country-wide decrease in formal employment, which directly affects pensions contributions nationally.
