In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo told Bloomberg News that the country is hoping for assurances of economic and defence support from the US after President Jair Bolsonaro meets with US President Donald Trump during an official visit to Washington DC on 17-19 March. According to Araújo, Bolsonaro will be seeking the US’s backing for Brazil’s bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); bilateral military cooperation; and a deal on the commercial use of Brazil’s Alcantara rocket launch site. Bolsonaro’s trip to Washington will be his first official visit to a foreign head of state since taking office last January, and it signals a re-alignment of Brazil’s traditionally neutral foreign policy.
