In brief: Brazil

* Rio de Janeiro’s municipal government has celebrated the 2019 Carnival as “the best in recent years”. The city welcomed a record 1.6m tourists for this year’s Carnival, with a total of 7m party-goers attending the street parties over Carnival week. The festivities generated R$3.78bn (US$977m) in revenue for the local economy, a 26% increase on last year. Rio municipality also noted that the number of attendees at medical posts across the city fell 16.4%, a reflection of “less heat and more responsible actions on the part of the population”.
