Introduction

In this March edition of Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America, we begin by looking at El Salvador. In his victory speech on election night (3 February) Nayib Bukele told his ecstatic supporters that the country had “turned the page on the post-war period” and should now look to the future, not the past. While this may be an overstatement, what is clear is that a battle between the old politics of El Salvador and what could be called the new politics is actually just beginning.
