* Costa Rica's President
Carlos Alvarado Quesada has revealed a new social policy strategy by his centre-left Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) government that will expand upon the 'bridge to development' initiative, launched in 2015 under the previous PAC administration to improve conditions for Costa Rica’s most vulnerable people. According to a presidential press release, President
Alvarado presented the five key components that comprise his new strategy to the civic centre for peace in the Guararí de Heredia district, a high-priority disadvantaged neighbourhood in Heredia province. The initiative will take an interinstitutional approach with collaboration from the ministries of work and social security, public education, agriculture & livestock, peace & justice, public security, culture and housing; as well as various institutions such as the institute of rural development and the institute of combined social support. The five key components will be 'bridge to wellbeing', 'bridge to community', 'bridge to agriculture', 'bridge to work' and 'bridge to prevention', which together will work with communities to improve employment opportunities, literacy rates, and security for Costa Rica’s underprivileged.
