The president’s promised drop in homicides still pending

Since assuming office on 1 December 2018, Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been dogged by questions on how he will deal with the insecurity in Mexico. His proposals, which mainly focus on the root causes of insecurity, rather than on confronting drug trafficking organisations head on, have been questioned by many. The beginning of his mandate was marked by a back-and-forth debate with the media over whether the murder rate had increased or decreased since his swearing-in ceremony. It is now widely accepted that the homicide rate has not decreased since December 2018 and expectations are high for the government to deliver on its campaign promises.
