Members of the political opposition in Mexico’s federal senate took advantage of a meeting with the visiting head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Michelle Bachelet, this week to ask for the UN to monitor the process of the creation of a national guard (GN) closely. The opposition has consistently expressed concerns that the new federal security force proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador could lead to the militarisation of public security in Mexico, which could further undermine the already poor human rights situation in the country.
